Agronomic characteristics of the spring forms of the wheat landraces (einkorn, emmer, spelt, intermediate bread wheat) grown in organic farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan.
Organic farmers look to the possibilities of growing neglected crops, such as the spring forms of hulled wheat – einkorn, emmer and spelt – for support in developing the organic farming system. In 2008, 169 landraces from the gene bank at the Crop Research Institute in Prague were tested on certifi ed organic plots. The experiment was aimed at fi nding suitable varieties for the organic farming system. In summary, our fi ndings show that einkorn (Triticum monococcum L.) and emmer wheat [Triticum dicoccum Schrank (Schuebl)] are resistant to powdery mildew and brown rust, spelt wheat (Triticum spelta L.) is less resistant to these two diseases, and the intermediate forms of bread wheat are very sensitive to such infestation. The varieties evaluated incline...

Ancient Wheat Species Can Extend Biodiversity of Cultivated Crops Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan; Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
Wheat genetic resources may be grown in organic farming systems or in less favourable areas for bread wheat species. Characteristics of hulled wheat species (23 varieties of einkorn, emmer wheat, spelt wheat) were studied and evaluated within a two-year trial period (which was executed on certified organic fields) and they were compared to characteristics of landraces and modern bread wheat varieties. The main aim of our study was to evaluate the potential uses of genetic resources of wheat in organic farming. The hulled wheat species were resistant to mildew and brown rust. Their grains were less contaminated with DON than the grains of the control varieties. The grain yield rate was reduced. Per hectare crude protein yield was higher in spelt and emmer...

Baking Quality of Winter Wheat Varieties in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan.
The technological value of wheat is negatively influenced by organic methods of cultivation. The critical factor is the crude protein content and quality. The aim of this paper is to identify diferences in the quality of eight varieties and two strains of wheat recommended in conventional or organic conditions. Correlation analysis of the qualitative parameters of wheat shows a clear relationship between crude protein content, wet gluten content and Zeleny - sedimentation value. According to the test results, it is appropriate to use the content and quality of protein as selective criteria for the selection of varieties. The Level of baking quality is never reduced below the quality level of the worstquality varieties grown in the same conditions. On the...

Composition of essential amino acids in emmer wheat landraces, old and modern varieties of bread wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
Tetraploid emmer wheat [(Triticum dicoccum (Schrank) Schuebl] has become a more attractive crop for growing in marginal areas and for the organic farming system. As it provides a lower yield rate and has a specific quality, it is an exclusive food crop. Therefore, the proportion and nutritive quality of particular essential amino acids (threonine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, lysine, methionine) and the total protein content were studied and evaluated in three-year trials carried out in two different localities. Furthermore, old and modern bread wheat varieties were compared. Results of our research confirmed a high crude protein content in grains of all the landraces of the emmer wheat. The emmer wheat variety contained 5% more...

Current conditions for seed use in the Czech organic farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Huda, P.; Blaha, Ladislav; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Moudry, Jan.
Council Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 of 28 June 2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products, and Commission Regulation (EC) No. 889/2008 of 5 September 2008 laying down detailed rules for the implementation of Council Regulation, are the most important European legislative instructions on organic farming. They lay down a permit to use just organic seeds for establishment of organic crop stands. Such seeds have to originate from the plants being grown in compliance with organic farming rules for at least one generation. Organic farmers are obliged, in compliance with the above-mentioned legislation, to use seeds originating from organic production when establishing crop stands. Otherwise, they are allowed to use their own seeds or they may...

Current situations in organic cereal seed offer in the Czech Republic Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Huda, Petr; Moudry, Jan; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
Organic farmers are obliged, in compliance with the valid legislation, to use seed originating from the organic production when establishing the crop stands. In a survey we found certified organic cereal seed is used on 6 %, conventional untreated seed on 37 %, and farm seed on 57 % (of the organically farmed area in the Czech Republic). The main reasons for that are as follows: the insufficient surface of land intended for the reproduction of organic seed, the low proportion of accepted seed coming from the accepted reproduction surface. Therefore, low-quality farm seed is used on a large proportion of organically farmed land, which has a negative effect on the yield level of the cereals. These observations were also confirmed by results obtained in a...

Differences in grain/straw ratio, protein content and yield in landraces and modern varieties of different wheat species under organic farming. Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Zechner, Elisabeth; Berger, Sandra; Grausgruber, Heinrich; Janovska, Dagmar; Moudry , Jan.
Hulled wheat species (einkorn, emmer, spelt) are presumed to be an alternative to bread wheat in organic agriculture since the yield penalty is less pronounced under organic farming and generally higher prices can be achieved for specialty grains. The present study analyzed differences between wheat species with respect to biomass production, harvest index, grain yield and protein content. Spring hulled wheat genetic resources and bread wheat check cultivars were grown in organic field trials in the Czech Republic and Austria between 2010 and 2012. Generally, hulled wheat species were inferior in grain yield and distribution of assimilates to the grain compared to modern bread wheat. Biomass production of some emmer and spelt landraces was similar to bread...

Differences in the Morphological Characteristics of the Land Races of the Soft and Emmer Wheat in Relation to the Modern Varieties Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan; Sramek, J.; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
For the organic farmers there is important question which varieties of wheat are right for organic farming in Less Favoured Areas. Modern varieties of wheat are bred in the conditions of conventional (high imput) farming. That is why the organic farmers asked about the suitability of land races of soft wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or different species like emmer wheat grown in the past (Triticum dicoccum SCHUEBL). The paper results from the study of fourty land races, two intermediate and ten modern varieties of soft wheat in comparison to ten land races of emmer wheat at two locations in the Czech Republic. We evaluated tuft shape, length of plant, length and width of flag leaf, length and density of spike and awnedness. The modern varieties of soft...

Differences in Yield Parameters of Emmer in Comparison with Old and New Varieties of Bread Wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan.
Emmer wheat (Triticum diccocum Schrank) belonged to the most frequent species of cereals in the past. Nowadays, it is grown in arid and montane areas in particular. Interest in this cereal species has increased, as it is tolerant to biotic and abiotic stressing factors. Therefore, yield parameters were evaluated in three-year (2007, 2008 and 2010) trials that were carried out in two different localities in the Czech Republic. Results of the research were compared to characteristics of four old and two top modern bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars. The emmer wheat varieties were resistant to usual wheat diseases. They formed their yield by a quantity of productive tillers (2.5), whereas the varieties of bread wheat had less productive tillers...

Diversity of carbon isotope discrimination in genetic resources of wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Moudry, Jan; Suchý, Karel; Capouchova, Ivana; Janovska, Dagmar.
Strong drought tolerance is an important objective in breeding new wheat varieties. We compared the drought tolerance of land races and modern varieties of various spring wheat forms. 13C discrimination (CID) indicated how significantly the tested wheat varieties were inclined to drought tolerance. CID is a trait related to stomatal closure and consequently an important component of the tolerance to drought. Samples were grown in České Budĕjovice (CZ), from 2009 to 2012. Twenty-three varieties, comprising einkorn, emmer, spelt, land races and control variety of bread wheat were grown and tested. Results have shown some varieties achieved low CID values (which meant they were more inclined to the drought tolerance). There were emmer and spelt varieties...

Emmer wheat using and growing in the Czech Republic Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Juza, Martin; Moudry, Jan.
Emmer wheat [(Triticum dicoccum Schrank (Schuebl)] is after bread, durum and spelt wheat further species of wheat used for economic purposes. Organic farmers and producers have become more and more interested in marginal crops such as the tetraploid emmer wheat because of its suitability for organic farming. In spite of its historical role, present distribution of emmer is very limited. The work analyzes the problem of growing possibilities of emmer and its suitability for cultivation in organic farming. In the Czech Republic it is grown only a few farms, but in Austria is more popular now. Possible candidates for the cultivation of emmer has several options about where to obtain a suitable variety. The best option appears to be the choice of legally...

Fusarium Identification by PCR and DON Content in Grain of Ancient Wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Moudry, Jan.
Fusarium infestation and DON content were studied in genetic resources of spring wheat (einkorn, emmer wheat, spelt wheat, intermediate forms of bread wheat). The study aimed at the comparison of grain contamination rates in various wheat species being grown in organic farming systems. The trials were established on certified organic parcels in two different localities in the Czech Republic in 2009 and 2010. The PCR method and specific primers were used to detect Fusarium. The proportion of deoxynivalenol (DON) was indicated and measured by the immuno-affinity chromatography (ROSA® DON Quantitative Test). The grain DON contamination rate (1.25 mg/kg) was set up in compliance with the European Commission (EC) Regulation No. 1126/2007. This regulation sets...

Genetic resources of hulled wheat species in Czech organic farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek.
As organic farmers are searching for new market and sale opportunities, the organic farming system may grow and process a wider range of species than the conventional farming system. Concerning wheat especially the hulled wheat species einkorn, emmer wheat and spelt wheat are in recent years of growing interest for organic farmers. Field trials were carried out at three Czech locations from 2009 to 2010 to study the performance of 4 einkorn, 8 emmer wheat and 7 spelt wheat accessions. All trials were spring sown and bread wheat variety SW Kadrilj was used as check. The results show that some accessions of the hulled wheat species are inclined to lodging. On the other hand, they are resistant to foliar diseases, e.g. powdery mildew and leaf rust. Hulls...

V laboratorních pokusech s pěti druhy jarních obilnin byla testována semenářská a biologická hodnota osiva (energie klíčení, klíčivost, energie vzcházení, vzcházivost, hmotnost tisíce semen).

Morphological and biological characteristics of the land races of the spring soft wheat grown in the organic farming system Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan.
Organic farmers have become more interested in the marginally grown (neglected) cultivars, as spring forms of the hulled wheat varieties (eincorn, emmer wheat, spelta wheat) or intermediate forms of the soft wheat. 173 land races from the gene bank at the RI in Praha-Ruzyně were grown on the organic certified parcel and evaluated in 2008. The trial aimed to evaluate the conditions of the competitiveness to weeds, tolerance to diseases, assimilation of the sun shine and establishment of the yield. The results show that all the evaluated material inclines to the competitiveness to weeds. This ability is, nevertheless, reduced because of the inclination to the lodging (all the cultivars have long weak stalks). Eincorn and emmer wheat are resistant to mildew...

Participatory Plant Breeding Concept as Tool for Creating Adapted Varieties for Local Conditions Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Janovska, Dagmar.
Organic farming has been developing worldwide over the last few decades. However, the crucial problem has not been resolved yet – a lack of suitable varieties. It is a serious factor limiting this development. Breeding is a very demanding and expensive process; special varieties are not bred for the organic farming from many crops then. A concept called "participatory plant breeding“ (PPB) is a possibility for resolving this problem. It is based on a direct involvement and participation of a farmer in the breeding process. Undemanding and cheap breeding methods are chosen there – they do not require any special education or equipment from the farmers involved. Training and professional surveillance are sufficient there. One of PPB methods has been already...

Produkce osiv obilnin v ekologickém zemědělství Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Janovska, Dagmar; Prokinová, Evženie; Honsova, Hana; Kas, Martin; Moudry, Jan.
Stěžejní legislativní normy Nařízení Rady (EC) No. 834/2007 a nařízení komise (EC) No. 889/2008 udávají podmínky použití osiva v ekologickém zemědělství.

Konvalina, Petr; Moudry, Jan; Kalinova, Jana; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek.
V metodice je zpracována problematika pěstování obilnin a pseudoobilnin jako hlavních tržních plodin ekologického zemědělství v ČR. První část zahrnuje obecné zásady pěstování rostlin (obilnin a pseudoobilnin).
